Employers will not have to check the legal status of workers

New legislation recently turned law prohibits states, cities and counties from mandating the use of E-Verify.

For several years, groups against illegal immigrants made cities in California adopt ordinances to verify each employee's legal status.

Several cities required businesses to enroll in E-Verify, an online program that uses federal databases to check the immigration status of workers. Businesses that refused to check could face fines or revocation of their business licenses.

Friends and family cite custody battle as a motive

What began a normal workday at Salon Meritage in Seal Beach, California Wednesday turned deadly when Scott Dekraai, 42, walked into the salon at around 1:30 p.m. wearing body armor and opened fire.

Dekraai shot nine people. Six were pronounced dead at the scene, two others died as a result of their wounds later in the evening and one person remains in critical condition.

Just a half hour after the shooting, Dekraai was taken into custody without incident. Authorities found multiple weapons in Dekraai's car.

Congressional mandate to decrease inmate population due to hazardous prison conditions

After an unprecedented Supreme Court decision on May 23, 2011, California prisons began moving inmates last week in order to decrease its prison population. The congressional mandate requires California to reduce the number of inmates by 11,000 over the next three months and 34,000 over the next two years.

Governor Jerry Brown signs law allowing illegal immigrants to access California financial aid

Governor Jerry Brown signed a law that allows illegal immigrants to apply for state aid in California in 2013. 

The new bill is the second half of the California Dream Act. Governor Brown signed the first half of the bill, called AB 130, in July. The first half allowed illegal immigrants to attain private loans and schloarships. 

The second half, called AB 131, allows top students on route to obtaining citizenship to apply for state aid. The bill completes the Dream Act and is expected to be effective starting January 1, 2013.

The Pentagon can’t explain what looked like a missile launch off the California Coast

Witnesses say they thought it was a missile launch, but the Pentagon is not ready to say exactly what was seen in the sky above the southern California coastline.

According to CNN, a helicopter took the images of a plume in the sky off the coast of California on Monday at sunset. Witnesses characterize it as a contrail from a high-altitude rocket, but the Pentagon has yet to explain the exact nature of the images.
