Onondaga County committee approves off-track betting

The Onondaga County Legislature’s Ways and Means Committee approved a proposal to allow Off-Track Betting during a meeting earlier this morning. The vote passed by a margin of 4-2, with one abstention.

"The county is diving into a cesspool of vices," Democrat Mark Stanczyk, said. Cnycentral.com reports lawmakers argued over whether the county should allow gambling.

11 missing oil rig workers were found alive after an oil rig exploded and caught fire off the coast of Louisiana, according to MSNBC. Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser told local NBC affiliate WDSU that the workers are alive and safe after the explosion that left the rig on fire in the Gulf of Mexico.

New cloud of ash threatens air travel

The eruption of the Icelandic volcano strengthened this afternoon.  After slowing down for the past few days, a new cloud of ash is now heading towards the United Kingdom.  This will once again threaten European air travel.  According to CNN.com, the volcano, Eyjafjallajokull, erupted a new cloud of ash 15,000 feet in the air.  This dashed the hopes of the travelers stranded on either side of the Atlantic.

Forbes released their list of richest men in the world and Carlos Slim Helu, a Mexican telecommunications billionaire tops the list. His net worth is $53.5 billion dollars according to CNN.com, which is half a billion more than Bill Gates.


This is the first time since 1994 that a non-American tops the list of richest men. There are also more than 1,000 billionaires, up a little more than 200 from last year. 

Airplane flight 188 misses destination

The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board is reviewing the cockpit voice recorder after a Northwest airliner overshot its destination by 150 miles on Wednesday.

According to CNN.com the airplane was flying from San Diego, California to Minneapolis, Minnesota carrying 147 passengers.

Hancock Airport one of the worst in the nation in arrival delays

Hancock Airport ranks 10th in on-time arrival performance according to a study released by the Brookings Institute today, reports syracuse.com.  The average time of delay in Syracuse was almost an hour according to the report, which was conducted over a 12-month period that ended in June.
