Karzai believes that a structured security pact is in the best interest for both the U.S. and Afghanistan

Afghan president Hamid Karzai has been meeting with the "loya jirga," which is the Afghan national assembly, to set up a plan for the future of Afghanistan.  These talks have included a security pact with the United States that would set terms on U.S. presence in Afghanistan.

Announcement comes as part of long-awaited plan to hand over security.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai announced today that seven areas of Afghanistan, including parts of Kabul, will be handed over to Afghan forces this July, according to CNN. The Afghan forces will be in charge of handling security of these areas.

Taliban involvement unknown

According to The New York Times, a NATO statement has announced that six officials from the organization have been killed by an Afghan police officer who recently completed training from the very troops he shot.  General Aminullah Amarkhail of the Afghan Border Police also confirmed the incident in the Times' Monday report.

Chittenango pays their respects.

The body of a Chittenango native who was killed in Afghanistan returned home Thursday.  Army Sergeant Ed Bolen was killed by a roadside bomb on Nov. 10, only two weeks after being deployed. 

The plane carrying Bolen's remains touched at Hancock Air Base shortly before 11:15 a.m.  According WSYR, a military transfer ceremony was held before the casket was driven to Chittenango.

Euthanized before reuniting with owner

A dog that saved soldiers' lives in war-torn Afghanistan couldn't survive his stay in an Arizona animal shelter. The dog, named Target, was mistakenly euthanized by an unidentified employee at the Pinal County facility, according to MSNBC.

President Hamid Karzai admitted that his chief of staff took money from the Iranian government to pay for presidential expenses.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai admitted Monday that the Afghan government has been receiving money from the Iranian government, according to The New York Times. He added that Afghanistan will continue to receive the payments, which he says are no more than $1 million two times a year.

Six foreign troops were killed today making it the deadliest day for NATO in nearly a month.

Six foreign troops were killed in Afghanistan today, making it the deadliest day for NATO in nearly a month, according to CNN.

Four of the service members died in a bomb explosion in southern Afghanistan.  The other two deaths occurred earlier. 

One died in an improvised explosive device attack. The other died in an insurgent attack in the eastern part of the country.

Hostage was initially believed to have been killed by Taliban captors.

Recent evidence suggests that a grenade assault by United States troops killed Linda Norgrove, a Briton being held captive by Taliban in Afghanistan, not her captors, according to The New York Times
