Yankees manager chooses youth over experience

New York tweaks its pitching rotation heading into the weekend.

Yankees' right-hander Phil Hughes was bumped up in the starting rotations for the American League championship series against the Texas Rangers. Hughes will now start Game 2 in Arlington, opposed to Game 3 in the Bronx, according to ESPN.

The 24-year-old started his first career postseason game less than a week ago in Game 3 of the divisional series against the Twins, pitching seven shutout innings.

New York manager Joe Girardi decided to start Hughes in Game 2 of the ALCS in favor of the battle-tested veteran Andy Pettite because of prior success against the Rangers.

In three career games against Texas (two starts), Hughes has tossed a combined 15 1/3 scoreless innings, limiting the Rangers to three hits and four walks while striking out 15.

According to ESPN, Hughes also had better numbers on the road this season: a 3.47 ERA and five homers allowed in 70 innings, versus a 4.66 ERA and 20 homers allowed in 106 1/3 innings in the Bronx.
