Syracuse University Basketball is racking up the Big East awards.
Wes Johnson was named 2009-2010 Big East Player of the Year and Jim Boeheim was selected as 2009-2010 Coach of the Year. The awards were announced at a press conference today at Madison Square Garden, the host site for the Big East Tournament.
Johnson, a junior transfer from Iowa, is the first transfer student to earn Big East Player of the Year honors. He is the fourth Syracuse player to earn the honor.
According to the Post-Standard, other Syracuse players who have earned the honor include: Derrick Coleman (1989-90), Billy Owens (1990-91) and Hakim Warrick (2004-05).
Boeheim is the winningest coach in coach in Big East history with a current overall record of 371-203 in the conference.
He ranks sixth all-time among Division I coaches in victories with 827. This is his fourth Big East Coach of the Year honor. He won the award in 1983-94, 1990-91 and 1999-00.
Boeheim and Johnson have led the Orange to a 28-3 regular-season record and the Big East regular-season title.
The Orange, ranked #3 in both national polls, earned the top seed in this week’s Big East Tournament and play on Thursday. They will face the winner of the Georgetown/South Florida game.

The earthquake that hit Haiti on January 12 affected millions of people.
Along with thousands of deaths and approximately one-million people left homeless, thousands of Haitian survivors have also lost their limbs.
Professor Tom Costello and students in the Biological Engineering Club at the University of Arkansas want to help these survivors get moving again.
They are collecting new and used prosthetic limbs, crutches, wheel chairs and other aides to be sent to Physicians for Peace in Virginia.
These limbs will be then sent to clinics in Haiti where they will be properly adjusted.
Costello and his students are getting the word out by using CNN’s, iReport. Here, you can learn more about this story and the organizations involved.
Donovan McNabb and Terrell Owens are teaming up again. However, this time when McNabb is throwing passes to T.O., it won’t be for the Philadelphia Eagles. In fact, it won’t even be on a football field.
Instead, the two will reunite as teammates on Spike TV’s “Pros vs. Joes.”
According to the Associated Press, the episode will feature NFL players that played college basketball against former NBA stars.
In the episode, McNabb (Syracuse), Owens (Tennessee-Chattanooga), and Antonio Gates (Kent State) will face Hakeem Olajuwon, Kenny Smith and Rick Fox.
