More young adults are unable to meet requirements to join the military, creating a potential threat to national security, said a group of retired armed forces. CNN reports according to Mission: Readiness, about 27 percent of young adults are medically ineligible for the military. Mission: Readiness is a group of retired admirals, generals, and other senior military leaders who have made a report called "Too Fat to Fight." The report said 75 percent of young Americans ages 17 to 24 do not qualify for the military because of failure to graduate from high school, criminal records, or physical problems.
"It's not drug abuse, it's not asthma, it's not flat feet -- by far the leading medical reason is being overweight or obese," retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Norman Seip, said.
"The logic is pretty obvious," retired Army Brig. Gen. Clara Adams-Ender, said. "The troops need to be in excellent physical condition because of the demands of the important jobs they do in defense."
Seip says the military loses around 12,000 young adults a year before they finish the first term of enlistment because they can't pass the physical fitness test. Mission: Readiness urged Congress to pass a new childhood nutrition law to remove school junk food and improve nutritional standards and quality of school meals.
Jets make deal with Taylor
The New York Jets and Jason Taylor agreed to a two-year contract today, The New York Times reports. The Jets made two other trades, one for cornerback Antonio Cromartie and one for wide recever Santonio Holmes. With these two trades and the signing of Jason Taylor, the Jets addressed their needs of improvement for next season.
Taylor is a six-time Pro Bowl linebacker/defensive end and turns 36 in September. He had seven sacks and 42 tackles in the 2009 season with the Dolphins. The Jets looks to use Taylor only as a pass rusher and sharing snaps with Bryan Thomas.
