Kansas City explains the closure of nearly half of its schools

Kansas City school district Superintendent Dr. John Covington defended the Boards plan to close nearly half of the 61 public schools in the district.

A 5-4 vote on Wednesday approved the Superintendent's proposal to close 26 schools in the district, cut 700 jobs and reduce the district's deficit by $50 million.

Covington told CNN.com, "No one likes closing schools. It's hard. It's tough on families, and it's certainly tough on our community."

Kansas City is among many school districts across the country that are facing school closures as a result of state and national budget cuts.
