Syracuse to host one of Northeast's largest plant-covered roofs

County Executive Joanie Mahoney announces plans for 50 new Green projects.

According to The Post-Standard, County Executive Joanie Mahoney will announce today a plan to build one of the largest plant-covered roofs in the Northeast. The plan is to build a $1 million, 66,000 square foot (around 1.5 acres) green roof on top of the Nicholas J. Pirro Convention Center.

The county says the green roof would soak up 1 million gallons of rain that would normally be lost in the sewer systems and contribute to sewage overflows in Onondaga Lake.

The green roof is just one of 82 potential green projects that the county has planned out. The Onondaga County Legislature hopes to have at least 50 of these projects finished this year.
