Syracuse University football fans get something more to smile about this morning than just the 19-14 upset over West Virginia this past Saturday. Senior Tailback Delone Carter said “I’m 100 percent and ready to go.” according to The Post-Standard.
This news comes as a sigh of relief for Syracuse Football fans everywhere after watching Carter exit from Saturday’s 19-14 upset of West Virginia midway through the second quarter after rushing nine times for 75 yards. At first it appeared that he was taking a breather while backup Antwon Bailey got a few carries. When Carter was seen walking toward the tunnel with team doctor Irving Raphael and head trainer Tim Neal with about 4 minutes left in the half, that’s when nerves started to fray. Fans got a pit in their stomachs when it was announced he would not return due to a bruised hip
As it turns out the worry was for nothing, the original diagnosis of a bruise hip was correct, according to The Post-Standard.
“I was ready to go back in, because it had nothing to do with the injury I sustained in the past,” Carter said. “It was something totally different. I was trying my best to get back in there, but I knew for my team’s sake it was more beneficial for Antwon to get in there”
At Saturday’s noon Big East game vs. Cincinnati (3-4, 1-1 Big East) Carter will make his debut with 2,433 career yards (No. 8 on the school’s career list), after irony would have it, missed the 2007 season with a serious hip injury, according to The-Post Standard.
The potential injury crisis hits home when you consider SU’s offensive game plan is built around Carter’s power running game. Fortunately, in last Saturday’s game vs. West Virginia, Bailey went in and ran with the same determination as Carter, with similar results. The idea of playing the last five games with Bailey, true freshman Prince-Tyson Gulley and maybe even linebacker Doug Hogue in a two-way role was concerning according to The Post-Standard.
With Carter back at practice Monday those concerns have been relieved. “Everything’s fine now,” Carter said. “I just thank God that I’m blessed to be all right and continue to be strong and healthy to play this game,” according to The Post-Standard.
