Syracuse Common Council makes no promise to give schools more money

Plus, a terrorism scare in a New York City subway tunnel and the SU lacrosse team visits Notre Dame.

Syracuse Common Councilors did not promise Syracuse City Schools Friday that they will provide them more money for the 2010-2011 budget.

Syracuse City School District Superintendent Daniel Lowengard said the district can reduce the 243 cuts it faces if the city allocates it more money than Mayor Miner has already proposed in her budget.

The Common Council said it is facing its own financial shortfalls, especially if it gets less sales tax money from the county, and may have to lay off police officers and firefighters.

The city has until May 8 to vote on the budget.

College student causes NYC subway scare

A suicidal college student caused a terrorism scare in a New York City subway tunnel early Friday morning after carrying highly toxic sodium cynanide in the tunnel, police said.

Track workers saw a 20-year-old man wearing a hard hat, a safety vest, and boots, wandering deep inside the tunnel under the East River. They pulled him aboard a train, and brought him to a subway station, where police found a quart of sodium cynaide pellets, five highway flares, and two bottles of water, in his backpack.

The man told police he was planning on killing himself by swallowing the chemicals.
