Syracuse lacrosse began its pursuit for a 12th national title with a 13-7 win over visiting Denver yesterday in front of more than 4,000 fans inside the Carrier Dome, according to The Post-Standard. The Orange dominated every facet of the contest, jumping out to a 6-2 first-quarter lead.
Jovan Miller started the scoring for the Orange with a rocket from the left side just 49 seconds into the contest. Syracuse scored three more goals before John Zurlo got Denver on the board.
The balanced scoring throughout the Syracuse lineup was clear from the start. Seven different players scored the first seven goals for the Orange and eight players scored in total.
SU's defense wasn't too shabby either. The Pioneers had trouble getting the ball inside the perimeter of the Orange Defense. Preseason All-American John Lade held Denver's star Alex Demopolis to just one assist.
SU's dominance was clear in the final stat line. The Orange won 17 of the 24 face-offs and picked up 36 of the 54 ground balls. All of the extra possessions helped spur the Orange to a 50-26 advantage in shots.
SU gets its chance for revenge against Army in its next game, Sunday afternoon. Last season, the Black Knights ended the Orange's participation in the NCAA tournament in the first round.
