Samuel Hengel, 15, of Marinette, Wisconsin shot himself as police approached the high school classroom where he held his classmates and teacher hostage for around five hours, police told CNN.
Hegel allegedly walked into class with a duffle bag carrying at least two weapons. He fired shots at the wall and other objects in the room, but police say he did not threaten the 25 hostages. Authorities say that the hostages tried to keep Hengel from becoming anxious by talking to him.
The situation unraveled when one of the kid’s parents called the school and authorities heard gunshots. When police reached the room, Hengel turned the gun on himself, they say. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead the next day.
Details on the crime and the motive are still scattered. Hengel appeared to be a good student, was well liked and didn’t have anything negative on his record.
