South Battles Snow Storm

Plus, who will light the Olympic torch at the opening ceremony and a criminal at-large

Schools, roads, state offices and flights have all been shut down because of the snow storm sweeping the south. Texas has already been hit with more than a foot of snow, its most since 1964. In the Dallas area there were nearly 200 car accidents and 175,000 houses without power. Some of these areas haven't seen snow in over a decade. Georgia and Alabama, which haven't been severely hit yet, are expecting power outages and are preparing for the worst. 

Over 800 Delta flights have been cancelled to Atlanta and schools in Florida are already closing expecting the worst.

Canada Speculates Who Will Light the Torch

Canada welcomes the world as the Olympics start tonight with the opening ceremony. The question remains who will light the Olympic torch for Canada on this historic night indoors. It is the first opening ceremony indoors, and the organizers have been discreet in what the festivities will entail. People in Canada are expecting hockey legend Wayne Gretzky to do the honors.

Others expect Betty Fox, the mother of Terry Fox, who is a hero in Canadian circles. Fox was battling osteosarcoma when he decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. 

A Criminal on the loose in Syracuse

A man facing three cocaine-related felonies escaped police custody. The man was leading police to a stash of illegal guns when he ran off police said. It started when the man was pulled over and an officer saw a beer can in the car, police said. The officer then found 13 grams of crack cocaine. The suspect told police he could take them to his friend who had a stash of illegal weapons. The police set up a "loose perimeter."  The suspect went upstairs and then ran away according to the police report.
