According to The New York Times, a NATO statement has announced that six officials from the organization have been killed by an Afghan police officer who recently completed training from the very troops he shot. General Aminullah Amarkhail of the Afghan Border Police also confirmed the incident in the Times' Monday report.
The troops were killed in the Pachir-Wa-Agam district of Nangahar, bordering Pakistan. This region of Afghanistan includes the Tora Bora Mountains and a former Al-Qaeda hideout that was infiltrated by the U.S. invasion following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. A NATO spokeswoman said an investigation is ongoing and will determine the nationalities of those that were killed.
According to the report, this is the fifth time in the past 13 months that trained Afghan border police have turned their weapons on their NATO counterparts. The most recent occurrence happened on Nov. 6 when two Americans were killed, and the Afghan gunman took shelter with the Taliban. Past episodes of this new development in a volatile region of the Middle East have also claimed to involve the Taliban.
