Rhode Island school board fires all teachers

Plus, Ithaca police claim suspect killed while resisting arrest and Lindsey Vonn crashes in first run.

A Rhode Island school board voted to fire all teachers at a struggling high school last night according to CNN.com. The firings came after the district says they could not come to an agreement with the teachers’ union on a plan that would have the teachers spend more time with the students in order to improve test scores.

All teachers at Central Falls High School were fired after the school board voted five-two to approve the plan written by Frances Gallo, the school’s superintendent. The terminations include the school’s 74 teachers and other educators such as guidance counselors, and the firings will go into effect next year.

Central Falls is one of the state’s lowest performing schools, but the school is 65 percent Hispanic and English is spoken as a second language for most of those students.

Gallo did tell CNN that some of the teachers might be rehired for the next school year.

Vonn crashes during first run

American skier Lindsey Vonn crashed during her first run of the women’s giant slalom according to espn.com.  Vonn was on pace to lead the overall competition, but lost control around a right turn and crashed backward into the safety netting.

The conditions for the race were wet, and the skier directly behind Vonn was called of the course before she could finish her first run.

Vonn was checked after crashing, but was able to get up and ski down the rest of the hill.  Elisabeth Goergl of Austria leads the event after the first of two runs.
