Pujols deadline passes without a deal

Albert Pujols set to become hottest free agent in baseball next fall.

The slugging first basemen for the St. Louis Cardinals set a deadline for talks on his new contract. That deadline came and went today at noon, leaving Pujols without a new deal heading into the season.

Pujols was seeking to become the highest-paid player in baseball as he was looking for a contract bigger than the 10 year, $275 million deal that Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez signed in 2008.

According to ESPN, the two sides didn’t exchanged offers in the last four days. Pujolssaid the he will not talk about his contract during the season so it will not distract him.  He is seeking a 10-year deal worth about $300 million.

General Manager John Mozeliak told ESPN, "We felt very good about the offer we made."  ESPN's Karl Ravech reports that the problem is in the amount of money being offered, not the years.

Pujols will report to camp on time Thursday.
