Paul the octopus dies

Andy Samberg remembers the animal fondly.

The SNL cast member Andy Samberg told PEOPLE that he was deeply moved by the loss of Paul the Octopus.

"I'm greatly saddened by this news, but must quote Paul himself when he said, 'Mo' Money, Mo' Problems,'" Samberg said about the creature that was made famous last summer as it predicted the results at the World Cup soccer games. "In this case, the 'problem' is death."

Samberg appeared at ESPN’s ESPY Awards ceremony this year dressed as Paul the Octopus.

Paul had been credited with correctly predicting the outcome for several games during the tournament, including Spain’s ultimate win at the final. His name and image became the topic of conversation the world over.

The octopus died on Monday at the Oberhausen Sea Life Centre in Germany.
