Onondaga Villages facing cuts

Plus, the Navy bans smoking on submarines and Kate Gosselin gets a new show.

Manlius is looking to issue a pay freeze for all its employees, the Liverpool School District is eliminating its universal pre-kindergarden program and Marcellus is thinking of making cuts to its police force. All of this is because of a proposition that would eliminate the revenue coming in from sales tax.

Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney and Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner met this week and announced they reached a preliminary agreement on a new 10-year plan to share sales tax revenue. This new plan means that towns, villages, and schools would eventually get no sales tax money from the city. The tax generated $276.7 million in 2009.

This proposal still needs to be approved by the county legislature and the city council. It would give 75 percent of the money generated to the county and the remaining 25 percent to the city. It would also slowly decrease the amount of money the county sees over time, though no time period was specified. (Syracuse.com)

Navy Bans Smoking on Submarines

The Navy has announced that it will ban smoking below deck on their submarines starting Dec. 31 of this year. Navy officials said this ban is being put in place for the health of non-smokers aboard the submarines. They want to cut down non-smokers exposure to second hand smoke.

In the past smoking below deck on submarines has been restricted to specific areas. It will also be up to individual submarine commanders whether or not crew members are allowed to smoke on deck.

Research shows about 35 to 40 percent of active sailors are smokers . The Navy said it will be providing nicotine replacement therapy aboard submarines to help sailor quit smoking. They will provide things such as Nicorette gum and nicotine patches to aid in the quitting. (CNN)

Kate Gosselin is Back with Her Own Show

The mother of 8 made famous from her show with her ex "Jon and Kate Plus 8" is back on TV not only on "Dancing with the Stars" but with her new show "Twist of Kate" on TLC. In "Twist of Kate" Gosselin will travel around the country finding out how others manage work, family, and all of life challenges thrown at them.

Her ex Jon Gosselin went to a Pennsylvania court this week seeking custody of their kids stating Kate neglected their kids and was more focused on making a name for herself in Hollywood than their family. He also said that she is not spending enough time with their children because she travels to LA for most of the week to tape "Dancing with the Stars." (CNN)
