A report in today's Syracuse Post-Standard reports that school officials, nurses, and doctors have been warned about the alarming increase of HIV in Onondaga County. Officials were concerned after at least ten new cases of HIV have been diagnosed in Onondaga County since last December. Columnist James T. Mulder reports that most of the cases stemmed from men who have sex with other men. The Health Department continues to encourage students to get tested for HIV.
With the regular season completed on Wednesday, the NBA starts its playoff season with games starting this Saturday. As ESPN.com reports, Lebron James cannot wait for the playoffs to begin and hopes to make a title run this spring before his impending free agency this summer. In the Eastern Conference, the Cleveland Cavaliers claimed the top spot while in the Western Conference, last year's champion, the Los Angeles Lakers claimed the number one seed. Four games on Saturday will officially mark the beginning of the NBA postseason.
The volcano that erupted in Iceland continues to thwart travel worldwide. According to CNN.com, the ash cloud left by the volcano has already disrupted upwards of 17,000 flights. For the most part, the ash has spread across northern Europe and officials say air travel has not been affected on this large of a scale since the terrorist attacks of September 11th. Some of Europe's busiest airports have been totally shut down due to the ash including London's Heathrow Airport. Meanwhile, France's Charles de Gaulle Airport is only allowing limited landings. The FAA has warned that volcanic ash could affect air travel for weeks.
