Onondaga County does its job responding to the 2010 Census

Plus, a Tennis legend is diagnosed with breast cancer and the West Virginia mining disaster continues to worsen.

According to the Post-Standard, approximately two-thirds of Onondaga County has filled out and sent back their 2010 U.S. Census form. The New York Department of State reports that compared to New York's 62 other counties, Onondaga County is far ahead of their pace. To be precise, Onondaga County has a return rate of 67 percent, tied for 17th. Wyoming County, just outside of Buffalo is one of the state's leaders with a return rate of 74 percent. The county yielding the worst return results is Sullivan County, which is located between Binghamton and New York City, having only 36 percent of its citizens returning their forms thus far. The Census is conducted once per decade. 

Martina Navratilova has breast cancer 

On Wednesday morning, tennis legend Martina Navratilova announced that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. ESPN.com reports that Navratilova expects to make a full recovery. Making the announcement while appearing on ABC's Good Morning America, Navratilova, 53, told reporters that she has been diagnosed with the earliest form of breast cancer. Navratilova will begin radiation treatment in May. Navratilova exited the tennis world in 1994 after capturing 167 singles titles only to return in 2006 and win the mixed doubles championship at the U.S. Open. 

 

West Virginia Mining disaster takes a nasty turn 

According to CNN.com, miners and their families, while still dealing with the grief of the tragedy are now blaming the mine operator for the fatal explosion. Reportedly, the operator of the particular mine had been ordered to pay record fines for both environmental and safety violations over the past few years. Massey Energy Company, a Virginia based company has accumulated millions of dollars in fines in recent years, including over 450 fines alone at the site of the explosion in Montcoal, West Virginia. Despite the criticism, Massey Energy Company continues to defend its working conditions.
