President Obama and Russian President Dmitri Medvedev signed an arms control agreement yesterday that will limit the two countries with the most nuclear weapons to 1,550 nuclear warheads and 700 deployed nuclear delivery vehicles. The agreement cut the number of allowed weapons by a third from the limitations negotiated by George W. Bush in the 2002 Moscow Treaty.
However, a new stipulation that a bomber counts as only one warhead, even though it can carry as many as 20, undercuts the perceived notion that the agreement will decrease the number of nuclear weapons in both countries. Hans Kristensen, an independent expert on American nuclear weapons explained the meaning of the contradiction.
"The paradox is that with the "fake" bomber counting rule, the United States and Russia could, if they chose, deploy more strategic warheads under the New START Treaty by 2017 han would have been allowed by the Moscow Treaty by 2012." said Kristensen.
The strength of the treaty are the new inspection procedures. Most arms control advocates say they lay a strong foundation for future treaties. The Moscow Treaty essentially eliminated inspections.
Syracuse students upset with the choice of Jamie Dimon, the CEO of JP Morgan Chase & Co, as this year's commencement speaker are organizing to find a new speaker. Around 30 students wmet in Schine to form a plan on Wednesday.
Students are upset with the choice because they feel that the administration's choice was influenced by the University's recruiting relationship with JP Morgan Chase. The concern is further legitimized because Dimon certainly pales in comparison to last year's speaker, Vice President Joe Biden.
The group came up with several suggestions to remove Dimon. Plans are in the works to stage a protest, to contact media outlets like The New York Times for national publicity, to write a letter to Dimon asking him to step down, and to contact faculty members at Syracuse that are also upset with the decision. Around one fifth of the senior class has already signed a petition to change the speaker.
The concerned students have organized the Taking Back Commencement Rally, a protest on the Quad on April 14 from four to six p.m.
KFC's famous "Double Down" will be in stores on Monday. The bunless sandwich features two pieces of fried or grilled chicken with cheese, bacon, and special sauce between them, and has already become an internet sensation. Testtasters in select markets raved over the sandwich, despite its unconventiality.
The Double Down has all the makings of a successful fast food item, including minimal nutritional value. The sandwich has 1380mg of sodium and 32 grams of fat, but only 570 calories.
The sandwich will cost $5, and will be available for a limited time.
Here you'll find what's happening in the news that you should know about now. Check this blog Monday-Friday this semester for regular updates throughout the day.
