Obama criticizes Arizona immigration bill

Plus, oil spills into the Gulf of Mexico after oil rig explosion and atleast 61 dead in Iraq bombing.

The Arizona immigration bill, which is considered one of the toughest in the nation, was highly criticized by President Obama Friday when he called it "misguided" and "unfair".

The bill states that immigrants should carry their registration documents at all times and gives police authority to question people who they suspect are illegal. (CNN).

Critics of the bill say it encourages racial profiling, and that police officers investigating a persons legal status only tend to look at race, nothing else.

In a naturalization ceremony in front of members of the military, President Obama said the bill would "undermine basic notions of fairness that we cherish as Americans, as well as the trust between police and their communities that is so crucial to keeping us safe."

Supporters of the bill say it is needed because of the governments failure to enforce its immigration laws. (CNN).

Oil rig explosion causes oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico

A 1-by-5 mile area of oil mix has spread across the surface of the Gulf of Mexico because of a recent explosion of an oil rig last Wednesday, according to the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard are still carrying out search and rescue missions. It was reported that atleast 12 people are missing and seven were injured. The oil rig company still hasn't determined the cause of the explosion. (CNN).

Officials are unsure if it is oil or fuel leaking from the rig and the well below, but "it certainly has the potential to be a major spill" BP Vice President David Rainy, said.

The dozens of vessels and aircraft sent also carried equipment to decrease the amount and impact of spilled oil. BP says they will drill a relief well in the area to minimize the envirionmental damage if they have to. (CNN).

Coast Guard rear Adm. Mary Landry said the sheen is "probably residual from the fire and the activity that was going on on this rig before it sank below the surface."

Iraq bombings kill atleast 61 people

A series of bombing targeting shiites killed atleast 61 people and wounded 100 others on Friday. The bombings hit a market in baghdad,  and a neghborhood in the Anbar province, say police.

Authorities haven't identified those responsible for the attacks, but say such coordinated bombings may well be caused by Al Qaeda in Iraq. (CNN).

The bombings occured a few days after the two most wanted Al Qaeda leaders were killed by US and Iraqi officials. Military officials say the effect of this on insurgents wouldn't stop them from continuing to carry out attacks. (CNN).
