The Syracuse Post-Standard has reported that the Nine Mile Point 1 nuclear power plant in Scriba, N.Y. closed down today. Operators had to manually shut down the plant because of high water levels in the reactor. The plant closed around noon today.
According to the Syracuse Post-Standard, the high water level was due to a feedwater system malfunction. The abnormal level posed no threat but still required the plant to shut down. Plant operators shut down the unit by inserting control rods. There were no further complications following the shutdown, and the plant will make the necessary repairs to solve the issue.
My Take: It seems like the plant did everything in their power to stay in control of the situation. The public should not worry since there is no immediate danger involved.
According to Yahoo News, a man with a gun and a bomb was reportedly seen near the library on the campus of the University of South Florida.
No shots or injuries were reported from the incident. Police took one person into custody, but it is not clear whether or not the person taken into custody is connected to the original report.
No confirmations have been made to determine if the report was real or just a prank. Yahoo News said campus police asked the Tampa police bomb team to investigate the belongings of the person taken into custody. Students on the campus were alerted of the situation by text messages sent out by administrators.
My Take: Whenever something like this happens, especially on a school campus, it needs to be taken seriously even if it looks like a joke. If lives are at risk, it’s no laughing matter.
New York Giant’s quarterback, Eli Manning will undergo an MRI on his sore right heel. Manning injured his right heel yesterday during the Giants’ game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
As he dropped back in the pocket, Manning went to plant his right foot and hopped up as if something popped in his calf or ankle. The initial diagnosis from a doctor was plantar fascia. Plantar fascia is a persistent injury that requires rehab but won’t keep Manning out of the lineup for this weekend’s game. Manning told Espn.com that the injury is nothing to worry about and that he just needs to get rid of the soreness.
My Take: I think Giants’ fans have nothing to worry about here. Eli will be just fine. He’s a fighter and this injury shouldn’t affect him too much out on the field.
