New York judges to see pay increase

After 12 years, judges finally get a higher salary.

A state judge has ordered New York State to raise the pay of its 1,300 judges retroactive to April 1, 2009, according the New York Law Journal.

The state’s judges have not had a pay increase in 12 years and the decision ruled by Nassau County Supreme Court Justice Karen Murphy found it unconstitutional.

The Court of Appeals found it wrong for judicial pay increases to be linked to issues not connected to compensation. That decision lead to the creation of a special commission that recommended judicial compensation.

Justice Murphy said everyone involved in the budget negotiations agreed raises were “both warranted and deserved.”
