Nation's most recent Medal of Honor recipient leaving Army

Staff sergeant retiring and moving to Colorado.

The nation’s only living Medal of Honor recipient for the current wars, Staff Sgt. Salvatore Guinta, is said to be leaving the U.S Army.

According to CNN, he will leave in June of this year and depart to Fort Collins, Colorado, with his wife, where he will continue his education using the GI Bill.

Guinta received the Medal of Honor in November for his actions during a fight in Afghanistan in October 2007.

“Guinta killed one of the guys who was dragging my team leader away, Sgt. (Josh)

Brennan,” said Sgt. Franklin Eckrode in an interview with CNN in November.

“Wounded another one. Recovered Sgt. Breenan. Brought him back to an area where we could secure him and continue

the fight. Started the aid on him.”

Two bullets hit Guinta that day. One hit his armored vest and the other hit a weapon on his back. He was able to escape the scene without any serious injuries, allowing him to return to work moments after the attack ended.

Over the course of seven years, Guinta served two tours in Afghanistan.

He has been honored multiple times since President Barack Obama awarded him the nation’s highest award for valor, most recently at Sunday’s Super Bowl in Texas.
