Mike Williams, Syracuse's standout wide receiver, has left the team, according to the Post-Standard's Donnie Webb. Williams approached Marrone Monday morning, informing the coach of his decision to quit. Marrone is unsure whether Williams is still enrolled in school. This news come just weeks after Williams was suspended for violating team rules. A finalist for the top college wideout in the nation, Williams was having a stellar season with 49 catches, 746 receiving yards, and six touchdowns.
My Take: Williams was Syracuse's only legitimate offensive weapon so far all year, and his departure makes the team much weaker. It's disappointing that a player so important to his team will just quit with no explanation.
Star actor Nicolas Cage, who has headlined such blockbuster hits such as National Treasure and its sequel, says he is broke, cnn.com reports. Cage blames his long-time business manager, Samuel Levin, for allegedly mismanaging his money. The lawsuit says Cage is "forced to sell major assets and investments at a significant loss, because of Levin's incomepetence, misrepresentations, and recklessness." Cage owes the United States six million dollars in back taxes, but says Levin never filed them. The actor is suing Levin for 20,000,000 dollars, and to save money, is selling many of his huge mansions across the globe.
My Take: Despite Levin's alleged mishandling of Cage's money, Cage is still legally responsible for his own money in a lot of ways. He keeps getting income with movies as well, so this issue shouldn't turn into a major problem. He can make 40,000,000 dollars in one year, so paying off six million in back taxes shouldn't be a huge issue.
CBSnews.com reports that 3 North Dakota softball players are missing. The girls, who play on the Dickinson State University team were last heard from late Sunday night. From what reports tell, the players tried calling a friend, mentioning something about "help" and "water." The girls were believed to be in a 1997 white Jeep Cherokee with am California plate before going missing.
My Take: These intial reports are vague and don't tell much at all about where the girls were or why they have gone missing. Nothing is told about where they were going in the Jeep.
Here you'll find what's happening in the news that you should know about now. Check this blog Monday-Friday this semester for regular updates throughout the day.
