Miami Heat's Mike Miller sidelined due to injury

The injury-prone Miami Heat suffered another blow when they learned that their current starting shooting guard will be sidelined for several weeks.

The news on the injury front has been a common theme for the Miami Heat during the NBA preseason.

According to ESPN, shooting guard Mike Miller will be sidelined for several weeks due to a thumb injury he suffered during practice on Wednesday. Miller was injured when his right thumb got tangled in a teammate's jersey.

More tests examining the injury to Miller's shooting hand are scheduled for today. Hand surgeon Dr. Andrew Weiland, a New York-based specialist is expected to examine Miller's injured thumb.

Miller is one of the NBA's top 3-point shooters and is expected to be replaced by James Jones, another top 3-point shooter. The Heat have yet to say anything regarding a formal diagnosis or possible recovery time.

In the preseason, Miller was averaging 9.4 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 3.2 assists in 24.4 minutes per game. Miller had been starting in the place of the injured Dwyane Wade, who is currently out with a strained right hamstring.

Miller came to the Heat in large part because of the opportunities he could get playing alongside Wade, LeBron James, and Chris Bosh. He was the NBA's second best shooter from 3-point range last season. He signed a $25 million, five-year contract with Miami this summer.
