Mental illness in China undiagnosed, untreated, and unspeakable

In a culture where mental illness is considered shameful and often goes untreated, China has seen a rash of killings this year by mentally ill men. Some of the victims were primary school children.

It's those that are not treated that worry officials the most. Yang Jiaqin was treated for only one month, despite clear signs of schizophrenia for years. His hallucinations led him to massacre his neighbors with kitchen cleaver one April afternoon. If he had been treated for mental illness, this would not have happened, according to the chief doctor of the psychiatric hospital where Yang is currently staying.

China has yet to adopt a national mental health law, although it has been in the works for half a century, according to The New York Times. Psychiatrists are few and far between, and those that do practice are severely underpaid. Even the Psychiatric hospitals themselves cannot find the funds to stay in business.
