Man dies in Syracuse's second homocide of 2010

Plus, "The Hurt Locker" wins Best Picture and Turkey earthquake kills more than 50 people

A man was shot in the head while driving on East Genesee  St. last night.  Police later declared his death Syracuse's second homocide of 2010, according to The Post-Standard.  The first occurred in January 2010. 

The shooter was a man driving in another car that pulled up next to Vernel Hills, 27, and fired several shots.  Hills was taken to Upstate University Hospital. He died there later in the night.

Sgt. Gary Bulinski could not say if there are any suspects at the time.  It is also still unknown if there were any other people in Hills's car, or if anybody was taken into custody yet.  Police closed off East Genesee St. for the night to continue their investigation, but the west side has been re-opened for morning traffic.

The Hurt Locker wins Best Picture

Despite Avatar''s success at the box office this year, The Hurt Locker won the award for Best Picture over nine other nominees at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards last night.  According to Entertainment Weekly, the movie also won five more Oscars, including the award for Best Director for Kathryn Bigelow, who was the first woman to ever win this award.

Sandra Bullock had a big night at the Oscars as well, winning the Best Actress award for The Blindside, and just as most people thought, Mo'Nique won Best Supporting Actress for her role in Precious.  The  Best Actor award went to Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart and Christoph Waltz took home Best Supporting Actor for Inglourious Basterds.

Avatar , the highest grossing movie of all time, won awards for Best Visual Effects, Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction.

Turkey earthquake kills more than 50 people

71 are injured and 51 are dead after an earthquake struck Turkey at 4:32 a.m., according to CNN.  The earthquake, which hit Elazig province, was recorded a magnitude 5.9.  There were also dozens of aftershocks, reaching magnitude 5.5, after the quake.

According to the deputy governor of Elazig, the search and rescue continues, although there should be not be anyone left in the rubble by now.  The Red Crescent is currently at the scene, setting up tents and giving help to the people in the village affected by the earthquake.
