LIVERPOOL, NY -- A Liverpool man has been accused of stealing money from an insurance settlement on a home that was burned in a fire back in 2009, according to The Post-Standard.
Scott. E Wood, 40, is accused of stealing $44,900 which is a third-degree grand larceny, according to State Police. The Frauds Bureau of the New York State Insurance Department opened an investigation when a North Lawrence homeowner contacted Nation Wide Isurance Company about a claim settlement. Woods was later arrested on April 13.
The insurance department said the homeowner told the insurance company that Wood contacted him after the insurance company paid the homewoner about $300,000 for the loss of his home. The homeowner said Wood told him he could get more money if he used the services of a lawyer known by Wood. The homeowner was expected to split additional money with the lawyer.
The homeoner then called the insurance company after his encounter with Wood and the insurance fraud department was contacted.
Wood brought the homeowner a check from Nationwide for $89,800. Wood told the homeowner to deny the transaction took place if Nationwide contacted him.
