Lawmakers approve funding plan for $12.4 million sports arena at Onondaga Community College

Onondaga Community College is expecting construction on a new SRC Arena to begin as early as next month. The $12.4 million arena will feature a six-lane track, basketball and tennis courts, a fitness facility and seating for up to 6,500.

The Post-Standard reports that about $6.2 million will be covered by the state, another $2.8 million covered by tax payers, and the remaining $3.35 million will be loaned by the county.

The arena is planned to open in Dec. 2011.  

 

Deaths at West Virginia Mine Raise Issues About Safety

In Montcoal, West Virginia, rescue workers began removing explosive methane gas on Tuesday from the coal mine where at least 25 miners were killed the day before. According to the New York Times, federal officials and miners say that Monday’s explosion might have been preventable.

According to two miners, the Upper Big Branch had been evacuated three times because of dangerously high methane levels.

Moore Leads Connecticut to Women’s Title

Connecticut rallied back in the second half to win their seventh national title.

According to the New York Times, 6-foot-forward Maya Moore scored 18 of her 23 points in the second half for UConn’s 78th straight victory and its second straight unbeaten season.
