The controversy rocking the school district continued last night as residents called for members of the Jordan-Elbridge school board to resign.
According to The Post-Standard, speakers at the board meeting criticized the way the board was handling school affairs. During the hour-long meeting, residents also frequently criticized board members and administrators personally. Some residents said they feel as if the board has lost the confidence of the community.
Board President Mary Alley and members Connie Drake and Jeanne Pieklik said they will remain on the board, despite requests for them to step down. Residents at last night's meeting were concerned about how the current controversy is affecting the district. Board members didn't provide much information to answer the concerns of those in attendance.
The controversy surrounding the district largely stemmed from recent shakeups among administrators. Since June 2009, two administrators have been suspended without pay. High school Principal David Zehner was suspended with pay in December and the superintendent's five-year contract was not renewed after three years. An administrator was transferred involuntarily and the district treasurer was fired.
An interim candidate for superintendent was picked by the Jordan-Elbridge school board. Larry Zacher was selected as the district's candidate. Residents inquired about who's working on preparing next year's budget, with there currently being no superintendent or business manager. Board members didn't directly answer many of their questions, although they did say they would discuss candidates for interim superintendent and pending litigation and undisclosed personnel matters.
Overall, residents want more openness on the part of school board members in terms of keeping the public informed about board decisions.
