Jets release former first-round pick

Team releases Vernon Gholston today after three seasons without a single sack.

According to ESPN, Gholston, the sixth overall pick in the 2008 NFL draft, will be remembered as one of the biggest draft disappointments in Jets history.

As a highly touted collegiate star from Ohio State University, Gholston failed to record a single sack in three seasons with New York.

It was an expensive draft mistake by the Jets, who signed Gholston to a five-year contract that included $21 million in guarantees.

His impending release was expected for weeks as he was a healthy scratch for all three playoff games.

Sean Ellis, Mike DeVIto and Trevor Price are the three remaining defensive ends left this offseason on the Jets roster.
