Hoffman withdraws candidacy for Congress

Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman bows out of the race in New York's 23rd Congressional District, puts support behind Republican candidate Matt Doheny.

Conservative candidate Doug Hoffman has dropped out of the race in New York's 23rd Congressional District, according to the Post-Standard. Hoffman was defeated in the Republican primary on Sept. 14 by Matt Doheny, but decided to remain in the race on the Conservative Party line.

Hoffman said that he never wanted to split the Republican vote in the 23rd District, and urged his supporters to now vote for Doheny.

"Matt Doheny and I may have differed on some issues during the course of our primary race," Hoffman said. "Now, we must put those differences aside and do what is best for our nation. So today, I am asking all my supporters to cast their vote for Matt Doheny on Election Day, Nov. 2."

Doheny plans on traveling to Syracuse today and addressing the media at 4 p.m.
