H1N1 "National Emergency" is for administrative purposes

Over this weekend, President Obama declared H1N1 a national emergency; however, experts are saying the move was administrative.

This past weekend President Obama announced that the H1N1 flu has become a national emergency. According to the USA Today, the intention of the declaration was not to create havoc among Americans, but to illustrate the steps that the White House Administration is taking towards treating H1N1. As a 'National Emergency', health care workers will be able to override some patient care rules for a more speedy treatment and to have the ability to control H1N1 from spreading among nearby patients. Currently, over 46 states has had reported cases of the H1N1 flu and and that there has been over 20,000 hospitalizations.

My take: Even though Americans have found out about President Obama's declaration this weekend, it is vital for them to know that the purpose of this declaration is more for administrative purposes to take care of the patients. The move allows health care workers to override some rules to more effectively help patients, diagnose, and a quicker treatment. I think it was a smart idea to play the offense and attack H1N1.

OnCenter looks to increase ticket prices

According to Syracuse.com, the OnCenter is looking to increase ticket prices to help new developments in several venues. The proposed plan will be decided Wednesday when the idea is brought to the Board of Directors. The ticket prices are estimated to increase anywhere from one dollar to two dollars depending on the event. The Onondaga County War Memorial, Crouse-Hinds Concert Theater, Carrier Theater and the BeVard Studio in the Civic Center will all be affected by the proposed plan.

My take: I know for many Syracuse residents, the extra fee is a probably a nuisance. Yet, when I read through the entirety of the report, it makes sense and seems like it will become an effective way of funding for the venues that need updating. The idea will be voted on Wednesday and so it will be interesting to see the feedback from the plan as more and more residents discover the plan.

Paranormal Activity captures the weekend box office

Entertainment Weekly reports that the horror film Paranormal Activity may sweep this weekend's Box Office results. The film beats out the six installment of Saw (Saw VI) which made about $14.8 million in its opening weekend. This opening is the worst opening for the SAW movies yet. Paranormal Activity has grossed almost $63 million dollars already with Halloween still one week away. Some are estimating that the film may gross at least $100 million.

My take: Most horrors films are known to be on a tight budget and are only expected to really make good money in their opening weekend. However, Paranormal Activity is continuously attracting strong numbers, week by week, to the movie theaters across the nation. It will be interesting to see how much the films grosses and the milestones it will surpass and create for future horror film movies.
