According to CNN. com, Eleven people were killed and another 31 people were injured as a gunman opened fire on Fort Hood in Texas today. There is a possibility that more than one shooter was involved in the tragedy. Fort Hood is the United States Army's largest post. The shootings occurred at the sports complex on the military grounds. President Obama referred to the incident as "tragic" and "a horrific outburst of violence". Fort Hood is home to almost 40,000 soldiers, with 25,000 being present on any given day.
My Take: This story holds relevance because of the constant debate on our troops being stationed overseas. Now, we may have a situation where troops aren't just been killed overseas, but are being killed within our own military grounds by their colleagues.
Today marks the first day that the H1N1 vaccination is available to children in Onondaga County. According to CNYcentral.com, parents can register their children for the vaccine online at their home school district's website. The demand to get an appointment with the Onondaga County Health Department has already reached the point where the online process is being slowed due too much activity. The clinic for the vaccination will be held from November 16th to December 11th.
My Take: At this time, the vaccination is something to keep an eye on because the availability for adults is something that will come into question in the near future. The big problem could be the amount of the vaccination that is left over after the children have received it.
Yankees Manager Joe Girardi came the aide of a woman who had been in a car crash just hours after the Yankees had clinched the World Series. According to ESPN.com, Girardi was trying to flag down assistance to the one-car accident on the Cross County Parkway in Eastchester, New York. On approaching the scene, Girardi instructed his wife to call 911 and made sure the passenger was okay. Hours earlier, Girardi guided the Yankees to their 27th World Series title in franchise history and first since 2000. He won three World Series titles as a player for the Yankees.
My Take: It is an interesting story when you hear about people of fame responding to situations that we deal with in everyday life. The fact that Girardi took the time to stop and help at the crash site after the biggest win of his managerial career speaks volumes to his character.
