Ethics panel says trips to caribbean are gifts.

The House ethics committee said on thursday that Representative Charles Rangel violated congressional gift rules when he went on corporate-sponsored trips to the Caribbean in 2007 and 2008, The New York Times reports.

Rangel, who leads the House Ways and Means committee, was one of five members of the Congressional Black Caucus to go on these trips organized by the Carib News Foundation. However, these trips were largely funded by corporations such as Pfizer, Verizon, and AT&T, and sponsorship was present at the events.

The Ethics committee admonished Rangel even though he didn't know of the sponsorships, saying he is still responsible because two of his staff members knew. The report says Rangel is responsible for the actions of his staff and the performance of their duties.

Randel disputed the findings, saying "members of Congress should not be held responsible for what could be the wrongdoing of staff unless there is reason to believe the members knew or should have known." The Representative also said the ethics committee should be some-what responsible because they approved the trips in advance.

100 year-old doctor will not retire

Dr. W.G. Watson of Georgia will turn 100 years-old this year, he is the oldest known practicing physician in the United States according to CNN.com. He says he has delivered between 15,000 - 18,000 babies. He stopped delivering babies and doing surgeries in 1996, but he continues to make house calls and treat patients. His partner, Dr. Michael McDonough was also delivered by Watson. McDonough says Dr. Watson's work ethic "is unsurpassed by anyone."
