Two years ago, Chris Brown was charged with assaulting Rihanna on the eve of the 2009 Grammys, according to CNN. But Los Angeles County Judge, Patricia Schnegg, lifted the retraining order.
Brown was previously required to stay at least 50 yards away from Rihanna and 10 yeards if both singers were at the same industry event. Although it was set to expire in 2014, Brown's lawyer, Mark Geragos, asked the judge to lift it early.
According to Rihanna's lawyer, the singer "does not object to the reduction to the stay away order." Judge Schnegg said Tuesday that Brown "has done a very good job of completing the domestic violence program in a timely manner."
The argument that took place back in 2009 began over an incident at a Beverly Hills party, according to Brown's probation report. In a sworn statement by LA Police Detective DeShon Andrews, the incident began when Rihanna discovered a text message on Brown's cell phone from "a woman who Brown had a previous sexual relationship with." The couple argued while in the car being driven by Brown. According to the police report, Brown punched Rihanna numerous times and put her in a headlock, restricting her breathing and causing her to start to lose consciousness. Brown threatened to beat and kill her, according to the statement, and bit her ear and fingers. An investigation was started and Rihanna (real name Robyn Fenty) was issued a domestic violence emergency protective order.
A ring on Brown's right hand caused cuts and bruises on Rihanna's face where he punched her. Brown made a public apology on his personal website in July 2009 asking "that you forgive me. Please."
