Syracuse second baseman Pete Orr laced a game-winning single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, giving the Chiefs an 8-7 win over Lehigh Valley in the season opener, according to the syracuse.com. The Iron Pigs jumped out to a 7-6 lead in the top half of the frame when Rich Thompson plated ex-Yankee Cody Ransom. But the lead was short-lived as Syracuse left fielder Roger Bernadina tied the game in the bottom of the ninth with a solo blast off Iron Pigs closer Ehren Wassermann.
Joel Peralta, who surrendered the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth, got the win. Chiefs starter J.D. Martin went 6.2 innings allowing just two earned runs and driving in two of his own at the plate. Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner threw out the ceremonious first pitch. The Chiefs and Iron Pigs will resume Friday for a matinee at Alliance Bank Stadium.
Malcolm McLaren, who pioneered the punk-rock band the Sex Pistols, died Thursday from cancer, according to CNN. Young Kim, McLaren's girlfriend, said Thursday the manager died in Switzerland after battling mesothelioma. McLaren's son, Joe Corre, and his half brother, Ben Westwood, were with him when he died.
Westwood is the son of McLaren's ex-wife, Vivienne, who along with McLaren opened a boutique called "Let it Rock" in 1971. McLaren renamed the boutique "Sex" in the mid-70s and adopted a band which he later called the Sex Pistols. After the Sex Pistols' broke up in 1978, McLaren went on to produce the pop act Bow Wow Wow and record several albums of his own.
Butler head basketball coach Brad Stevens, who shook the college landscape by leading the Horizon League champion to the National Championship game, signed a 12-year extension Thursday with the school, according to ESPN. The 33-year-old coach took the Bulldogs to within a basket of winning the National Championship. Butler fell short to Duke 61-59.
The value of the contract is unknown, but the deal locks Stevens through the 2011-2012 season. After Butler's surprise run to the championship game, which included wins over one-seeded Syracuse, two-seeded Kansas State and Michigan State, Stevens' name was linked to several vacant BCS coaching positions.
Oregon, Clemson and Wake Forest were among the schools interested in Stevens. But after mulling it over with Butler athletic director and former coach Barry Collier, Stevens decided he was content at the small university just outside Indianapolis. Stevens set a Butler single-season record with 33 wins in 2009-2010. His team closed the year on a 25-game winning streak that dated back to December before dropping to Duke in the tournament finale.
