President Obama announced Friday that Gen. James L. Jones has resigned as the National Security Adviser according to The New York Times. The Principal Deputy National Security Adviser, Thomas E. Donilon, will replace him.
It has been long rumored that Jones would be leaving the administration. General Jones and President Obama never seemed to work well together according to aides. Jones began traveling more often while leaving much of the responsibility of the 250-member National Security Council to Donilon.
Because of that, Donilon already plays an important role in Obama's administration. In the past, Donilon has been Obama's first person to call when a problem arises. Therefore, White House Officials say it is unlikely that Donilon's promotion has a substantial effect on policy.
A White House official also said that another foreign policy aide, Denis McDonough , would be Donilon’s principal deputy.
