According to an article by Syracuse.com, Vietnam War veteran Larry Dobson received a Purple Heart today after being injured in an attack more than 40 years ago. "It's a wonderful feeling, it really is," Dobson, 60, of Baldwinsville said.
April 18, 1969 Dobson and two other soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division were driving a two-and-half-ton truck and trailer through enemy territory when a hidden explosive device blew up. They were thrown from the vehicle.
The Army initially ruled he didn't deserve a Purple Heart because the incident was considered an accident and not an attack. Last November, Dobson and his family reached out to U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, who intervened on their behalf.
