Hamid Karzai begins his 2nd term as Afghanistan's president today as the official swearing in took place. The ceremony was not publicly broadcast in fear of a Taliban attack. Karzai takes office in a trying time in Afghanistan's history. War is still brewing and now reports are that the government is one of the most corrupt in the world. Karzai assured the people he was dedicated to stopping corruption.
My take: This story is significant because it's been in the news recently that Afghanistan has had problems recently within their government. This also is an important story because the United States is responsible for Karzai.
The Senate unveiled their health care bill today. The bill's total cost is $849 billion and plans to cover 94 percent of all Americans. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid unveiled the bill which also will reduce the federal deficit by $130 billion by the year 2019. The Senate will now debate the bill. If it gets the necessary 60 votes to pass, the House bill and Senate bill will be brought together and a compromise will be presented to President Obama.
My take: Health care is the most important topic in the country right now so I figured I would include it in the newstracker. If passed, this legislation will be momentous in American history. It needs to be reported.
The New York Knicks have not ruled out signing Allen Iverson. After a great career in Philadelphia, Iverson has bounced around Denver, Detroit, and Memphis this year, where he and the Grizzlies parted ways after just 3 games. The point guard is also being courted by the Miami Heat. Iverson has been unhappy in recent years because he has been playing off the bench, a position he doesn't want to be in.
My take: This story is important in the sports world because it has to do with a future Hall of Famer changing teams yet again. Following Iverson is always interesting because he's done so much in his career, but now he is reduced to arguing on whether he should be coming off the bench or not.
