Afghan President Hamid Karzai admitted Monday that the Afghan government has been receiving money from the Iranian government, according to The New York Times. He added that Afghanistan will continue to receive the payments, which he says are no more than $1 million two times a year.
The New York Times printed an article on Oct. 23 that claimed Karzai’s chief of staff, Umar Daudzai, received frequent payments between $1 million and $2 million which were then distributed to law makers, tribal leaders and the Taliban.
Karzai says the exchange of money is part of an ongoing relationship between neighbors. He pointed out that Afghanistan also gets “bags of money” from the United States as well, according to CNN.
