15 receive Medal of Freedom

President Obama awards medals to diverse group.

Former President George H. W. Bush, poet Maya Angelou and baseball player Stan Musial were among the 15 people to receive the Medal of Freedom on Tuesday, Feb. 15 from President Barack Obama according to CNN.

The Medal of Freedom is considered the highest civilian honor.  At the ceremony, President Obama explained why each person was receiving the medal.

Other recipients included: Georgia Congressman John Lewis; Natural Resources Defense Council co-founder John Adams; German Chancellor Angela Merkel; investor Warren Buffett; artist Jasper Johns; Holocaust survivor Gerda Weissmann Klein; humanitarian activist killed in Afghanistan Tom Little; civil rights activist Sylvia Mendez; former Boston Celtics player Bill Russell; nonprofit leader and former U.S. Ambassador Jean Kennedy Smith; AFL-CIO chief John Sweeney; and cellist Yo-Yo Ma.
